We recently had a heated debate with a city inspector over the proper way to install ice & water shield and drip edge.
According to the International Building Code, ice & water shield should be installed over the drip edge. That may work in a perfect scenario — but it completely ignores one major factor: gutters.
In real-world conditions, especially in colder climates where ice dams are common, best practice is different:
- Ice & water shield should be tucked behind the gutter
- A gutter apron/drip edge should be installed over it
Why? Because this method protects the edge of the roof sheathing/plywood during ice backup — one of the most vulnerable points on a roof.
Unfortunately, because the code doesn’t account for gutters, the inspector required us to follow a method that we know leaves the home more exposed.
So here’s the question for homeowners and contractors alike:
👉 Would you rather follow code to the letter… or install it the way that actually offers better protection for your home?
Curious to hear your thoughts.
